Asian Scientist Magazine Publishes 2023 Asian Scientist 100

Asian Scientist Magazine has released the eighth iteration of the Asian Scientist 100, which features scientists and industry leaders from Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong SAR, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The list highlights top scientific talent in the region and honorees must have been awarded a national or international prize in 2022 or achieved a significant accomplishment such as a scientific discovery or demonstrated leadership that advances scientific enterprise.

Groundbreaking Achievements

From groundbreaking achievements in understanding glacial cycles and structural geology to advancing space exploration, the list showcases the groundbreaking achievements of researchers and industry leaders striving to transform our world. Asia’s researchers continue to serve marginalized communities and push the boundaries of the unknown to accomplish significant achievements.

Science to Improve Lives

Honorees featured in this year’s list have harnessed science to improve the lives of people and the environment we live in, according to CEO and publisher of Asian Scientist Magazine, Dr. Juliana Chan. The list highlights trailblazing women in sustainability, mental health, and more, including Dr. Asha DeVos, the founder of Sri Lanka’s first marine conservation research and education organization, and Dr. Aletta Yñiquez from the Philippines, who advocates for sustainable fishing practices.

Old Scars and New Solutions

Mental health is also a focus of the list, with researchers working to find new solutions and heal old scars. Following the Cambodian Civil War, roughly 40% of Cambodians suffered continuing mental health problems. Psychiatrist Dr. Chhim Sotheara has consistently led community-based integrative mental health support, while neuroscientist Professor Vidita Vaidya won the 2022 Infosys Prize in Life Sciences for exploring the brain mechanisms behind mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

New Generation of Scientists

By highlighting the efforts of top scientific talent in the region, Asian Scientist Magazine hopes to encourage a new generation of young scientists. The Asian Scientist 100 (2023 edition) is available online.
