Mayor Adams Seeks Biden Administration’s Help for Migrant Crisis
Mayor Adams traveled to Washington on Thursday to once again advocate for the Biden administration’s assistance in addressing the city’s migrant crisis. He was joined by congressional representative Hakeem Jeffries and other members of the city’s congressional delegation in a meeting with homeland security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Constructive Meeting and Positive Outlook
After the meeting, Congress members reported that it was constructive and produced some commitments from the Biden administration. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez expressed optimism, stating, “We’re at a moment where the administration needs to make a decision. I feel positive about us getting to that soon.”
Congressman Gregory Meeks revealed that the Department of Homeland Security would assign a liaison to the city. Federal officials also discussed ways the administration could legally expedite work permits for asylum seekers. Meeks emphasized the importance of allowing individuals to work, as it would contribute to tax revenue and reduce reliance on taxpayer dollars.
Governor Hochul’s Support and Requests
Governor Hochul has been a strong ally of the Adams administration. Yesterday, it was announced that the state-owned Creedmoor Psychiatric Center campus in Queens would soon house a migrant relief center, with the state covering the costs.
Additionally, Hochul requested the use of the federally owned Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn to accommodate migrants. She stated that the Biden administration is actively identifying other federal sites, and expressed hope for announcements in the near future. Hochul has been in constant communication with the White House and congressional leaders, advocating for adequate space, work authorizations, and funding.
Unity Among New York’s Leaders
Elected officials emphasize the unity among New York’s leaders on this issue. This week, 54 state and city elected officials signed a letter urging President Biden to declare a state of emergency and address other pressing demands regarding the migrant crisis. Governor Hochul highlighted her continuous conversations with the President and congressional leaders, expressing optimism for a breakthrough in the near future.
