Introducing Clallam County’s first Poet Laureate
Jaiden Dokken, Clallam County’s inaugural Poet Laureate, is inspired by the natural beauty and unique culture of his home. “Clallam County influences my poetry in the same way that this place influences who I love,” Dokken explains.
Dokken, who grew up in Port Angeles and attended Peninsula College, was appointed as Poet Laureate by the Clallam County Arts Commission earlier this year. The position aims to promote the literary arts, encourage creativity, and inspire the community.
The power of poetry
For Dokken, poetry is a way to connect with others and express emotions that are often difficult to put into words. “Poetry has the ability to convey feelings and ideas that can’t be expressed in any other way,” he says.
Dokken has already begun using his position to promote poetry in Clallam County. He’s held readings at local coffee shops and bookstores, and he’s working on organizing a poetry festival for next year.
The future of poetry in Clallam County
As Poet Laureate, Dokken hopes to inspire a new generation of poets in Clallam County. “I want to encourage young people to express themselves through poetry,” he says. “It’s a powerful tool for self-expression and can help build self-confidence.”
Overall, Dokken wants to use his position to promote the literary arts and bring the community together. “Poetry has the power to bridge gaps and create connections,” he says. “I’m excited to see where this journey takes me.”
