The Relationship between Lifestyle and Cancer:

While many factors contribute to the development of cancer, lifestyle factors are among the leading risk factors that one can control.

In recent times, several studies have shown that unhealthy lifestyles such as unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical activity, excessive alcohol intake, tobacco usage, and high levels of stress can significantly increase the risk of cancer development. It is essential to note that people can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by adopting a healthy lifestyle. Let us explore some lifestyle changes that can make a difference.

Dietary Changes:

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can reduce the risk of certain cancers such as colorectal, lung, and breast cancer. Consuming a high level of processed and red meat, on the other hand, has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. It is, therefore, essential to shift to a plant-based diet to lower the risk of cancer.

Physical Activity:

Lack of regular physical activity has been independent of some forms of cancer, such as breast, colon and endometrial cancer, in particular in commercially developed nations. Based on research, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity every week can reduce the risks of various types of cancer.

Limit Alcohol Consumption:

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can increase the risk for various cancers, such as liver, colorectal, and breast cancer. Limited moderate alcohol consumption may decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases, but it is essential to avoid over-consumption associated with cancer.

Avoid Smoking:

The leading cause of lung cancer and other respiratory system cancers is smoking, so it is important to avoid or immediately stop smoking. Passive, or second-hand, smoke has similar effects to smoking on cancer risk, so it’s recommended to avoid situations where you could be exposed to it.

Stress Management:

Stress management strategies like regular exercise, meditation, yoga, music, dance and quality sleep can help in combating persistent stress, cortisol buildup and hence help suppress the proliferation of tumor cells in the human body.

Combining a healthy diet and regular physical activity along with limiting your alcohol consumption or quitting smoking is necessary to reduce your risk of cancer.
