Challenges Faced as an Expat
When I moved from New Zealand to the US, I underestimated the financial cost involved. Being away from family and trying to establish a new community has been challenging. Revisiting my home country often leads to reverse culture shock.
I relocated to California over a decade ago after marrying an American. Despite my long tenure in the US, I still confront similar obstacles as when I first arrived. The pull of my home country, New Zealand, and the family I left behind remains strong.
Adapting to Unfamiliar Cultural Norms
Navigating the competitive culture of the US, where self-promotion is key, has been a struggle. Contrasting with my upbringing in New Zealand, known for its humility, has made social interactions in the US challenging.
The Struggle of Being Away from Family
Living far from relatives has been emotionally and financially straining. Raising my daughter without the support of an extended family has been tough. The inability to visit family overseas frequently due to high travel costs has impacted our relationships.
Feeling Disconnected from Home
Despite my family still residing in New Zealand, the distance has created a disconnect. Visits back home have triggered reverse culture shock as I now feel like a tourist in my own country. Adapting to the changes in both the US and New Zealand has left me feeling like I don’t entirely belong in either place.
Overall, despite the challenges of expat life, I have found a sense of belonging in California and cherish the relationships I have built. Taking a chance on myself and following my heart has brought me happiness.
