Why My Name is Christine
The question of what’s in a name can be a complex one. For me, it was a matter of who held me first when I was born. Unlike many babies who are attended to by corpsmen, my dad, a registered nurse and officer, was the one who took care of me at birth. He signed my birth certificate and named me Christine. It’s a name that has stuck with me ever since and has become a part of my identity.
The Names of Bakersfield
In our city of Bakersfield, names carry a lot of history. From streets and neighborhoods to places of interest, the names in our community have fascinating stories behind them. In this issue, we explore the origins of Ming, Truxtun, and Chester avenues, Seven Oaks, Hillcrest, and Oleander. We also dive into the histories of Sharktooth Hill, Guthrie’s Alley Cat, and Beale Memorial Library, among others. Through these stories, we gain a sense of place and a better understanding of our city’s past.

April is a month near and dear to my heart, as it holds both my birthday and Easter, sometimes even falling on the same day. It’s a time of new beginnings and fresh starts, with springtime in full bloom. Our columnists have put together a variety of articles to celebrate the season, including tips for taking fun springtime photos, using the best colors of the year for your home decor, and creating fresh and delicious drinks to enjoy with loved ones.
