US gives Ukraine cluster munitions despite global backlash.

Main Points:

The Ukrainian armed forces have confirmed they received cluster munitions sent by the US.

Ukraine announced they would follow five key principles in using the munitions, including only using them for de-occupation purposes and not in urban areas.

Despite reassurances from Ukraine, several countries including US allies expressed concern over the US’s decision to provide cluster munitions.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also expressed his opposition to the use of cluster munitions.

All countries expressing concern, except Cambodia, are signatories to the Convention on Cluster Munitions.

US officials defended the decision, stating it is a temporary solution until Ukraine has sufficient production capacity for unitary rounds.

During the NATO summit, Ukraine secured additional military aid packages from NATO leaders.
