The time is now for embracing laughter.

Babies’ innate ability to laugh

Before infants learn to talk or walk, they already possess the incredible skill of laughter. At around four months old, a baby’s first laugh can bring rejuvenation to an exhausted parent. Laughter becomes one of their primary means of communication with the world. Laughter acts as the social glue that connects people and enhances various experiences and interactions. However, the scientific understanding of laughter has been relatively limited. Stefanie Höhl, an evolutionary psychology professor at the University of Vienna in Austria, highlights that laughter is crucial to human coordination and interaction, despite the lack of knowledge surrounding it.

Exploring happiness from different perspectives

Stefanie Höhl is involved in the “Laughing Together” project, which is one of two studies funded by the European Union focusing on happiness from alternative viewpoints. Laughter and its impact on mental health have been overshadowed by the need to study negative emotions like anxiety and fear. In order to improve well-being, it is essential to understand both positive and negative emotions. Dr. Carolina Pletti, a researcher at the University of Vienna, emphasizes the need to increase positive emotions while reducing negative ones.

Laughter’s role in social bonding

Laughter’s ability to foster social connections and break the ice is easily explained. It releases endorphins in the body, providing a warm and feel-good factor. When individuals laugh together, their brain waves can synchronize, resulting in more efficient information processing, communication, and cooperation. Höhl and Pletti aim to investigate these brain dynamics further through their research project, aiming to reveal the missing puzzle piece in the understanding of laughter.

Examining synchronized laughter

In a groundbreaking study, researchers are exploring the real-time dynamics and impact of laughter on brain activity. Adult participants watch humorous videos and engage in laughter while their brain activity is captured using advanced technology. The initial findings reveal a short five-minute window in which individuals’ brain oscillations synchronize before the effect fades. The researchers are also interested in exploring how laughter impacts individuals who already have a pre-existing relationship. They hope to amplify these moments of synchronization and enhance positive behavior.

The potential for laughter in education and beyond

If laughter is found to significantly improve positive behavior and cooperation, it could become a valuable educational technique in schools and even the workplace. Understanding how preschool children interact, cooperate, and experience brain synchrony is a crucial aspect of this research project. Additionally, the Positive Emotions Project (PEP) focuses on studying a broad range of positive emotions, such as gratitude, wonder, compassion, and relief. By analyzing facial expressions, vocalization, and social norms related to positive emotions, the project aims to benefit individuals who struggle with verbal communication, including babies, children, and those with autism spectrum disorder and dementia.

Laughter’s contagiousness and benefits

Both research projects explore unexplored territories of human emotions across different cultures. The results could serve as essential references for the development of technologies that improve the communication of human emotions. The contagious nature of laughter and its countless benefits are undeniable, as it persists even in situations where humor seems unlikely or undesirable. Laughter holds a special place in human interactions and is an essential element in enhancing overall well-being.
