Sonia Robles is an accomplished author and a proud alumna of California State University, Chico. With a degree in History, Robles has combined her passion for the past with her love for writing. Her latest book, “Uncovering the Forgotten: Stories of Women in History,” highlights the often-overlooked contributions of women throughout history. We had the opportunity to sit down with Robles and ask her five questions about her journey as a historian, author, and advocate for women’s history.

Question 1: What inspired you to pursue a degree in History?

Robles: Growing up, I was always fascinated by the stories of the past. History was like a window into another world for me. I would spend hours reading about different time periods and the people who lived during those times. It was during my high school years that I realized I wanted to study history and learn more about the experiences of those who came before us. I decided to pursue a degree in History at California State University, Chico because of their renowned history department and the opportunities they offered for hands-on research.

Question 2: How has your education in History influenced your writing?

Robles: My education in History has been instrumental in shaping my writing style and subject matter. Studying history taught me the importance of research and critical analysis. It taught me how to evaluate sources and distinguish between fact and interpretation. These skills have been invaluable in my writing process, as I strive to present accurate and compelling stories. Additionally, my education exposed me to a wide range of historical events and people, which has provided a rich tapestry to draw inspiration from for my books.

Question 3: What motivated you to focus on women’s history in your latest book?

Robles: Throughout my studies, I noticed a recurring theme – the stories of women were often overlooked or marginalized in traditional historical narratives. It became clear to me that the contributions and experiences of women were not being given the attention they deserved. I felt a personal responsibility to shed light on these forgotten stories and amplify the voices of women throughout history. Through my writing, I hope to inspire others to explore and appreciate the diverse experiences of women and recognize the integral role they have played in shaping our world.

Question 4: What challenges did you face while researching for your book?

Robles: One of the main challenges I faced was the scarcity of primary sources when it comes to women’s history. Historically, women’s experiences and achievements were often not recorded or were overshadowed by those of men. This made it difficult to find firsthand accounts or sources that focused specifically on women. However, I persevered and relied on extensive research, using a combination of secondary sources and creative interpretation, to piece together these women’s stories. It was also a challenge to find a balance between highlighting stories from different time periods and cultures, ensuring a diverse representation in the book.

Question 5: What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

Robles: Above all, I hope my book leaves readers with a sense of awe and appreciation for the strength and resilience of women throughout history. I want readers to understand that women’s history is not separate from history as a whole, but an integral part of it. By sharing these stories, my goal is to empower and inspire both women and men to challenge traditional narratives and seek out the untold stories of those who have been marginalized. I hope it sparks curiosity and encourages further exploration of women’s history, opening up conversations about equality and inclusivity in our society.
