Elementary Students Engage in Fun Science Activities

As the school year comes to a close, Lincoln Elementary in Grand Island, Nebraska is keeping their students engaged with the Egerton Explorit program. This is the second consecutive year that students participated in a variety of fun science activities and learned about electricity. Breanna McDonald, Principal of Lincoln Elementary, explained that they try to match the program with some of the resources they use in GIPS (Amplified Science) and replicate what students learn in class.

Hands-On Learning for Summer Education

Science Day has become an end of the year favorite for students, who look forward to the program every year. The staff at Lincoln Elementary have high hopes for this program, which is thought to encourage engagement in summer school programming and interest in science, while combatting summer learning loss. Anna Lisa Baade, a Fifth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary, mentioned that Science Day allows students to use critical thinking skills and apply their knowledge to each activity. The program also included a portion where students got to choose the activity that interested them the most and self-select what they wanted to do.

Bringing Creativity to the Classroom

Science Day provided a unique learning experience that integrated hands-on activities that allowed for creativity and critical thinking. McDonald explained that the labs usually have more structured directions, but in the gym with all of their stations, kids get to self-select what they want to do, resulting in a lot of creativity. There were coding stations, building activities with different materials, and many other choices for students.
