6A baseball powerhouses take the field today.

Hempfield’s Dylan Firmstone steals second base next to Baldwin’s Dylan Lacher during their game on Monday, April 10, 2023, at Hempfield. Outdoor spring sports face a new challenge as weather becomes a concern once again. After enjoying above average temperatures and sunny skies, much colder temps and a threat of rain replace them at the beginning of the week. However, great matchups still await in another week of section series games in WPIAL baseball.

The first of a three-game section series will see four of the top teams in Class 6A collide. Seneca Valley, with a 3-0 section record and having swept Allderdice two weeks ago, leads Section 1-6A. The Raiders will face a tougher challenge as they visit Pine-Richland on Monday. The Rams are 4-2 and have won three straight against Allderdice after losing two of three to Butler.

In Section 2-6A, both the top two teams battle for first place with Canon-McMillan hosting Hempfield at Wild Things Park. Both the Big Macs and Spartans have impressive 5-1 records in section play. Watch Hempfield against Canon-McMillan on Trib HSSN at 4 pm.

There are also five other baseball section showdowns between the top two teams in that section. In Section 1-5A, Fox Chapel visits Franklin Regional. The Foxes are 5-1 in the section while the Panthers are 3-1 with two section games in hand. In Section 2-5A, Bethel Park is at Peters Township. The Black Hawks are 4-0 in the section and have a two-game lead over the 2-2 Indians, as well as Trinity and Connellsville. In Section 3-3A, first-place Greensburg Salem will travel to Wild Things Park to face McGuffey. The Golden Lions are 6-0 while the Highlands are a game back in the loss column at 3-1. In Section 2-2A, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart hosts first-place South Side. The Chargers are tied with Seton LaSalle for second place with 5-1 section records, one game behind the 6-0 Rams. In Section 3-2A, four teams have one section loss. Two of them collide on Monday when Serra Catholic travels to Ligonier Valley.

In district softball, for most teams, the first half of section play concludes on Monday. Hempfield, defending champion Seneca Valley, and Norwin are all tied for first place in WPIAL 6A softball, with all three teams boasting a 6-1 section record. The Spartans host Norwin in a matchup of Westmoreland County powers.

Other games to look out for include West Allegheny visiting Mars in Section 3-5A, Indiana at Knoch, Apollo-Ridge hosting Serra Catholic in Section 2-2A, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart visiting Burgettstown in Section 3-2A.
